How Hemeos Works

Our partner clinic, Apheresis Associates of Northern Virginia, specializes in blood stem cell collection and is conveniently located in the DC metropolitan area. Hemeos will arrange and pay for all donor travel.

SWAB – Once you register, Hemeos will mail you a cheek swab kit. Complete the swab and send it back using our prepaid envelope. Hemeos will send it to a lab to determine your HLA (human leukocyte antigen) typing. HLAs are proteins on your cells' surface. In order for a donation not to harm the patient, the donor and patient must have matching HLA types to prevent triggering a negative autoimmune response.

CONTACT – If you are identified as a potential match, Hemeos will contact you to begin the process.  This could happen tomorrow or years from now. For this reason, we ask you to let us know if contact information changes so we can keep in touch. Hemeos will give you details on your donation's time line and ensure you still want to continue the process. We will be with you every step of the way to answer questions and address concerns.

LAB TESTING - Next we will do a "confirmatory typing" to double check your HLA type and confirm that you and the patient are actually a  genetic match. You will also need to submit a small blood sample to ensure that your blood is safe (clear of HIV, hepatitis, etc) for transmission to the patient. Hemeos will arrange for a nurse to visit you to conduct these tests at your convenience.

MEDICAL WORKUP – The medical workup involves an Electrocardiogram (EKG), chest X-ray, and a medical exam with a physician to make sure you can safely donate. Hemeos will arrange all of this for you at no expense.  Hemeos will strive to work with our partners in your area to minimize the time and travel to complete your workup. If you do have to travel, Hemeos will pay for all travel expenses. Once the medical workup is complete, you will be eligible to donate.
